April 2, 2018

World autism awareness day puts the spotlight on the hurdles that people with autism, and those who support them, face every day. It also celebrates the quine talents of people with autism while putting the focus on how communities can be welcoming for people with autism. Wear blue on April 2 to support the understanding and acceptance of people with autism. Add the #LightItUpBlue frame to your profile photos on social media.

USA Science and Engineering Festival

National Robotics Week

April 7-15, 2018

National Robotics Week is designed to inspire youth to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math-related fields. Check out the National Robotics Week website to find great activity ideas like robot trading cards from IEEE, STEM Instructables, and contests and locate events in your area. Learn how robotics can help youth develop their engineering skills with the Real-World Application of Skills video-based learning module.

National Encourage a Young Writer Day

April 10, 2018

Do you have children in your program with vivid imaginations, maybe someone who likes to tell stories and reads a lot of books? Use this special day to encourage them to pursue their goals and develop their writing skills. Consider starting a young writers’ club or book club. Look for educators or authors in your community that would like to be part of a young writers’ club. Give your young writes a journal. Encourage them to use it as a place for daily writing - short poems, random thoughts, inspired essays. A writers’ club can help is a place young writers can build community and feel free to stretch their wings.

Purple Up! Day

"Purple Up! For Military Kids" is a day to wear purple to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. Purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military: Army=green, Coast Guard=blue, Air Force=blue, Marine=red, and Navy=blue.

National Bat Appreciation Day

April 17, 2018

April is the best time of year to observe bats. Bat appreciation day is a great time to learn about the important role bats play in the ecosystem. Cool things to know about bats:

  • In one hour, a single bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquitos.
  • Bats can see in the dark and use their extreme sense of hearing to help navigate.
  • There are at least 48 species of bats in the United States.
  • The largest urban bat colony in the US is found under the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas. It is home to an estimated 1,500,000 Mexican Free-Tailed Bats. The colony eats more than 10,000 pounds of insects each night and attracts about 100,000 tourists each year.

Earth Day

This year, Earth Day falls on Sunday, April 22 and the theme is End Plastic Pollution by 2020. We believe afterschool professionals make a difference in the life of a child. Join us in thanking the afterschool professionals in your life. Here are some ideas on how you can show your appreciation:

  • Declare on social media: "I believe Afterschool professionals make a difference in the life of a child. #heartofafterschool"
  • Give a hand-written card from you and/or your child to the afterschool professional in your life.
  • Send an email to an afterschool professional's supervisor describing why that person is appreciated.
