Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Month of September

About 1 in 6 (17%) children in the United States has obesity. For more information visit CDC's website. Get your kids outside and have them be active outdoors while also learning STEM!

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Month of September

In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. Spark your students interest in battling cancer with this PBS LearningMedia activity where students explore mitosis and learn about uncontrolled cell division or cancer. Wildlife Day

September 4 

World Wildlife Day will be celebrated in 2018 under the theme “Big cats: predators under threat". Visit WildlifeDay.org to learn more.Learn how to plan a safe and engaging STEM field trip to the zoo in order to creatively use physical space. 

NFL Season Opener

September 6

Throwing the ball farther? That’s science. Helmets with built-in radios? Technology and engineering. Using game statistics? Pure math. In any scrimmage, STEM is the star player. Use the NFL resource, STEM zone in the end zone to teach your students how STEM impacts NFL football.

Star Trek Day

September 8

World Wide Candle Lighting Day

National Candle Association offers this great resource on “how-to” advice for students undertaking science projects involving candles. And remember It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

National Aerospace Week

September 10-14

September 12

Are your students' rockstars at video games? If so, try out the National STEM Video Game Challenge. Check out their resources to help your students create their own video games!

Programmers' Day

September 13

Programming is one of the most in-demand skills in the world — and a high paying one, too. However, teaching youth the foundations of code can be a challenge, especially because the concepts are intangible and youth can become disinterested or frustrated if they’re unable to troubleshoot their mistakes. Websites like Tynker simplify programming by offering free coding games and lessons that help youth visualize how strings of code function, while also teaching the logic behind the codes.

Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) Day for Kids

September 17-23

Pollution Prevention is the key to saving our planet's resources and moving toward sustainability. Pollution is a global issue, and it will need to be met by a collaborative effort on all countries to help curtail it.
