Developing a STEM Identity

Purpose: Frontline staff and volunteers will support youth in viewing themselves as someone who learns about, uses, and sometimes contributes to science – someone who has a personal identity as a science learner.

As a result of ongoing, consistent professional development efforts, frontline staff and volunteers will be able to:

  • Describe real-world benefits for youth in using and contributing to science and engineering new and in the future.
  • Engage youth in science and engineering practices in ways that allow youth to make authentic contributions to STEM.
  • Design activities that support a positive attitude toward science.
  • Respond to the interests of youth in order to plan activities that develop their STEM identities.

Staff Development Guides

Staff development guides are designed for coaches and trainers to use when providing professional development to frontline staff or volunteers.   • Who Does Science?

    Participants will draw a scientist and take a photo for #ILookLikeAScientist in order to understand how to counter stereotypes about science identities.

  • Developing a Science & Engineering Identity
