National Youth Science Day

October 2019

Help celebrate the 12th National Youth Science Day by joining in the fun. This October 4-H will launch Game Changers to engage youth ages 8-14 in computer science. Game Changers is a collaboration with Google will allow youth to complete puzzles and complete physical activities to learn problem-solving skills, healthy living, agriculture, and much more.

Teachers/facilitators do not need any prior computer science or coding experience to lead youth in this activity. Check out the Preparing for the 2019 4-H NYSD webinar for great tips. Go to the NYSD website for additional information or to order a kit.

National Nanotechnology Day

October 9, 2019

10^-9; celebrate #NationalNanoDay by participating in activities on October 9th to create awareness of nanotechnology and the importance it has on our daily lives. It may seem like nanotechnology is the future, but it is the present as it is being currently used in medicine, batteries, food, fabric, etc. To learn more about its daily uses and applications click here. Earth Science Week

October 13-19, 2019

“Earth Science Week...promotes understanding and appreciation of the value of Earth Science research and its applications and relevance to our daily lives.”

The Geosciences Institute (AGI) has announced “Geoscience is for Everyone” as the theme for the 2019 Earth science week. To learn more about the resources and activities they have to offer click here.

Applying those activities is important in engaging students to not only learn about Earth science but to motivate and engage them through different activities. Check out the learning module Welcoming Youth for tips on how to create a safe, supported, encouraging, and creative space for youth to learn and explore.

Mole Day

October 23, 2019

Avogadro’s number; 6.02*10^23 is celebrated worldwide on October 23. This year's theme DespicaMOLE Me! focus is to foster interest in chemistry. The American Chemistry Society provides activities for youth of various ages and interests such as forensics, the periodic table, water, and chemistry. It’s spooky season, which means more opportunities to help youth become involved in STEM. Facilitate some eerie Halloween chemistry activities that will motivate and inspire youth. From boo bubbles to making fake blood recipe, there are activities for all ages.

Lastly, celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with hands-on activities and games from the Frankenstein200 Kit.
