Modeling Science and Engineering Practices

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Describe the scientific inquiry and engineering design processes as circular and flexible rather than rigid and linear.
  • Itemize the various stages of discovery and invention including asking questions, testing and redesign, and reflecting and explaining.
  • Identify opportunities to highlight STEM skills within one’s own behavior, promoting a sense of wonder within children in OST settings.
  • Facilitate opportunities for youth to apply the practices of science and engineering to OST experiences.

Get Started

Asking questions, trying ideas, and seeing how things work--that’s what scientific inquiry is all about. Out of school personnel support youth in this process by modeling these skills to the children in their care. Knowing that discoveries don’t usually happen in a linear order allows adults to meet children wherever their curiosity emerges and to guide them to deeper investigations. This module includes video examples and downloadable resources to equip the provider in this coaching role.
